With squirrel season beginning, I pulled what I had left out of the freezer from last season. How am I going to cook these tasty critters? Well, I had a few options that proved tasty in the past, but I wanted to do something different this time. Suddenly, it came to me. A stew with fresh vegetables from my garden was the taste I was after!
I got out my cheap camp pot. I don’t particularly like this pot due to the rubber grips on the handle, but it’s what I have at the moment. Then I made my way outside to the garden.
Out in the garden, I grabbed my little shovel to dig up some carrots. I bunched my carrots in tight patches to have them grow to the perfect stew size so all I had to do was nip off the ends and maybe a small cut to some. Next, I dug up an onion and gathered some green beans. I washed everything up and tossed it in the pot.
I cut the squirrels to fit properly in the pot and filled it up with water. After seasoning with some seasoned salt, pepper, and a dash of mesquite it was time to get the fire started.
It hadn’t rained in some time in my small part of the world so the fire was rather simple to ignite. I sat in my chair and watched the stillness of the woods as the coals readied for cooking. I also grabbed a few fresh sage leaves to add in the pot.
Once the coals were ready I placed the pot on the grate to stew. It was a fantastic evening with the sun coming down and the birds and bats flying about eating bugs. The utter peace of it soothed my mind and the sound of a crackling fire brought comfort to my soul.
After three peaceful hours, it was time to eat.
I made a video of the stew on my youtube channel, here is the link https://youtu.be/JFTSTO-qpzs
